One month ago I was the first customer in New York State to take delivery of a CYBERTRUCK. In addition to loving fast cars with loud engines, I also love EVs. I’ve owned five Teslas, including the Model S Plaid. In November of 2019, I put down a deposit for the CYBERTRUCK immediately and ended up with reservation #171 nationwide. Below are some of my thoughts on ownership so far:
It’s huge. It looks huge in pictures, but nothing can prepare you for how big this thing is. Not only is it long, it’s also very tall with the variable suspension settings. I’ve never owned a pickup truck or an SUV this large. Despite its size, the most underrated aspect of the CYBERTRUCK?
It drives as nimble as a sports car due to steer by wire. I’m shocked at how large the turning radius is and how easy it is to maneuver into parking spaces. It took 30 minutes to get used to and now feels normal. Instead of moving the wheel around multiple times, you just have to move it slightly.
It’s a huge step up for Tesla’s ride quality. This thing drives like a dream and is more quiet and smooth on the road than many other high-end luxury vehicles out there. The interior materials too feel much more premium. As a daily driver, this thing is absolutely perfect. It feels like a $100k+ car should.
And yes, it’s fast, but in a different way. I have the 600 HP dual motor edition. It goes 0-60 in 3.8 and quarter mile in 12.43 according to Drag Times. It doesn’t throw you back like an EV normally does though due to its nearly 7,000 lbs of weight. You just end up at high speeds really fast without even knowing it.
One of the top features is the HomeShare functionality. It has 120KW of battery power, which can power my home in an outage for 5+ days. To get backup batteries with 120KW of power, I’d be spending nearly 100k. It’s like a backup battery with a free car attached.
The most jarring thing is the attention it gets. It is like being a celebrity. I’ve driven some rare and exotic looking cars. Nothing compares. I have to allot 5-10 minutes if I park it in a public area like a downtown strip or a grocery parking lot. Everyone wants to see it, ask questions, and take pictures. I even oddly had someone filming me for 10 minutes yesterday while I was loading groceries. The craziest thing is that many folks do not know what it is. They didn’t know it was a Tesla and they didn’t know the CYBERTRUCK existed. Imagine seeing this spaceship thing randomly on the road and not knowing it should exist? Crazy.
Overall, I love the car and it’s now our daily driver. It’s the perfect mix of - exotic looks, luxury comfort, and ultimate utility. It’s also a nice balance between the Corvette. One is huge and quiet, one is low to the ground and LOUD. I don’t think you can beat it for the value.
